The reason for celebrating this festival is to thank the sun god and to mark a beginning of agriculture every year. The day before pongal is celebrated as bhogi which is termed as a festival to “burn out old and get into new”. It was told with respect to the habits of humans but it was misinterpreted and it nowadays is a festival to burn out the old things with a intention to increase the radius of the hole in the ozone layer. The day next to pongal is “Maatu(cow) Pongal”. This day is to pay tribute to the group of oxens and cows which help in the agriculture process.
The festival of tamil nadu…the festival of agriculture…Pongal ,has went out smoothly inspite of few cases out there in the court and also it is the happiest thing that tamilnadu has recorded the least smog ever in the Bhogi day. And also the burning of the rubber tyres and plastics is almost nil this time.
This time the highlighted talk for pongal was the event of jallikattu. It was a answerless question till the last minute whether the event will take place or not. On one side the villagers argued that it was their culture and also a symbol of bravery. They also quoted the increasing fame and increased number of visitors every year. This was opposed quoting that many people lose their worthylife for a single day’s worthless fun. But anyway it was the clture and bravery which happened this time.
According to the academic view of pongal, it is the most awaited festival in India because it marks the beginning of the national holidays and also gives a 5 days holiday pack for students. We take this holiday as a start for our on-duties to go on for hunting prizes in symposiums and culturals. Well there are lots of cultural fests coming up… which will be explained in the next post.
